All About Your Feet

The foot is Mother Nature's masterpiece. The 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles in each foot work together to stand up to the pressures of daily living. The average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day, which adds up to about 115,000 miles over a lifetime. That's enough to walk around the earth four times!

It is important to understand your feet and care for them properly to keep you walking upright and pain-free throughout life's journey.

Foot Care Facts:

If you want to follow a good foot health plan, you first need to look at your shoes. Poorly designed shoes that do not allow the foot to function properly can aggravate foot conditions like bunions, corns and calluses and irritate sensitive, diabetic and swollen feet.

The worst assumption you can make when buying a pair of shoes is: "These shoes will be comfortable after I've broken them in." If shoes do not feel comfortable straight away, then they simply do not fit.

Shoe Buying Tips

  • Always purchase shoes from a shop with a large selection of shoes and a well trained staff.
  • Get your feet measured every time you purchase a shoe. A child's foot can change as many as 26 times as he grows. An adult's foot usually changes another four or five times during a lifetime, aside from pregnancy and changes in body weight.
  • Always try on both shoes and fit your larger foot. Walk around the shop to get a feel for the shoes. Stand in a natural position with your weight evenly distributed on both feet, legs comfortably apart.
  • If your feet tend to swell, shop for shoes later in the day when your feet are swollen
  • Take the socks or insoles with you that you anticipate wearing most often
  • Buy a shoe with adjustable fastenings, such as laces, buckles, Velcro or straps.
  • The ideal shoe should have a broad based heel with a height no greater than 4 cm and the bottom of the sole should be flat and have adequate cushioning. The material that forms the main part of the shoe should ideally be leather, have some flexibility to it and allow the foot to "breathe." The fastenings should hold the foot in the shoe and prevent the foot from sliding around in the shoe. The inside of the shoe should be soft and without protruding seams.
